Victor Gama at Designersblock London 2009

August 11, 2009

Victor Gama’s first participation at Designersblock 2009 features a Toha, one of a series of contemporary musical instruments he designs called Pangeia Instrumentos. Pangeia Instrumentos is also the title of his first album for Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records.

Toha is a musical instrument that can be played by two musicians and it’s design was inspired by natural forms, specifically by the nest of a weaver bird in Southern Africa. It was recently redesigned as part of a commissioned work by the Kronos Quartet for a piece written by Gama due to be performed by the group at Carnegie Hall, New York in March 2010. In March 2009 he completed a commission of several contemporary interactive instruments for the National Museums Scotland as part of the Royal Museum Project.

Working in both music and design and using 3D modelling and cutting edge technologies such as CNC, Laser Cutting and Selective Laser Sintering, Victor Gama’s work continually strives to cross Borders of all kinds, and the freedom of his designs can be as well appreciated in both his music and his instruments.
