Born in Australia 1978, Rousseau moved back to England at a young age and went on to spend his college years at Colchester Institute, before completing an HND in 3d Design and Creative Model-making at Kent Institute, of Art and Design followed by BA in Product and Industrial Design at Middlesex University in North London.
Upon completing his degree in May 2001, Rousseau was invited to represent Middlesex University at the New Designers show held in the Business Design centre, Islington. Amongst other interest from the show was the Introduction to Max Fraser of Design UK, who invited Ben to display his work at the Designers Block show, held in conjunction with 100% Design at the Jam Factory. After much interest and press coverage both here and abroad, Rousseau was again invited to join the
Design UK team for the prestigious Milan Furniture Fair of 2002. In between these two exhibitions Ben collaborated on a unique installation with Photographer Kyra
Warnes at the Gray Space Advertising Gallery. This increased his passion for lighting and design and resulted in him taking on a full time job producing and managing events at Slice PR for such clients as MTV and Destiny’s Child.
This alongside his personal interest in Music and Dj’ing gave him the most intimate experiences in how an interior space works and how needs to be created. After 2 years at Slice, Rousseau decided he had the experience and knowledge he needed to realise his new ideas and in May 2004 Rousseau Design was set up, specialising in high end bespoke furniture and interiors. During the last 5 years Rousseau Design has built up an impressive portfolio of work and clients. Initial projects included working with set designers to produce furniture for “The Games” TV show by Endermol, producing stage sets and styling parties for Oakley and MTV’s Lil jon and working on the European launch of the Xbox 360 where Rousseau created a bespoke gallery displaying customised consoles by 16 international artists, including that of Jamie Hewlett of the Gorillas.
One of Rousseau’s most exciting recent projects was the co-design and install of the new Glade Bar at Sketch, Mayfair alongside Mourad Mazouz and Christian De Falbe. Work regularly takes Rousseau abroad with regular commissions in Ibiza, a series of projects in France and Spain with Jason Maclean on his brand “The House at…” and most recently, a second stint at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi, arctic Sweden. The use of lighting is often present in Rousseau furniture, products and interior items and with new designs in the Elektrowerkz range, a series of timber furniture, plus many new items of furniture and lazer cut lighting accessories. Latest products in development include a range of high heel shoe inspired artworks for Swarovski, furniture ranges for Tema Home, Portugal, travel luggage and accessories for Gumball 3000 and a new range of high end sports car inspired seating.
