Anthony Leyland is a mathematics graduate; this grounding informs both his art and design practice.
He enjoys exploring how rules and constraints can drive the creative process. He uses natural objects, industrial systems and conceptual frameworks – readymade objects that have rules of use and composition embedded within them.
Manifold 2 is a mathematical game to create an entire table (top and legs) from a square of sheet material, by cutting and bending alone. This first series is further constrained to using only simple geometric elements, such as straight lines, arcs, rotational and mirror symmetries.
When these simple constraints are systematically explored and applied, without conscious stylistic decision making, the results are varied, striking and beautiful. As such manifold 2 is not a single “optimal” design but a process of repetition and variation, enabling distinct families of solutions to evolve.
Anthony Leyland – Manifold 2
Like many, Anthony has become increasingly concerned with the need to act on climate change, as well as the looming threat of peak oil. Responsibility for tackling these issues falls to designers and producers of commodities as much as consumers. Anthony is currently exploring sustainable solutions for a post-industrial, post-consumerist society.
