embi designs is exhibiting as part of the group ‘0.6 collective’. It is the company of North Lodon based designer-maker, Michele Berry, whose driving force is to bring the worlds of art, craft and design closer together, whilst broadening social perceptions of ceramics.
Michele uses clay as a principal material typically incorporating glass, metal, textiles or wood -either intergrated with ceramic processes or used in post-firing structural procedures. Traditional craft processes are modified and re-applied conjuring up something of incidential nature. She deliberatlely employs the traditional language of “pottery” together with a bold sense of contemporary design in a bid to encourage enquiry and reassessment, resulting in products often displaying an ambiquous nature.
Through her handling of materials she elevates the status of the ordinary: exposing essential qualities by allowing materials to display their aesthetic appeal with a natural honesty. Her love of material s and processes interweave and overlap, dictated only by a desire to best realize the project in mind. As the designers said:
“As a maker I strive to create objects that enhance life. I am an advocate for the pleasure to be gained through utilitarian function, the beauty to be found in the ordinary and the desire to bring your world closer through interaction. I endeavour to make objects that beg to be explored; objects that encourage the recipient to live a truly sentient life.”
