A new concept for the occasion of interiors 2010
We are inviting designers, companies and manufacturers to do what they are good at together.
To produce a unique range of pieces that stand up in their own right whilst communicating their respective qualities to the broad and sophisticated audience that comes together every year for the occasion of Interiors Birmingham.
For the third year we are delighted to have been invited by United Business Media to produce a feature area for Interiors Birmingham the UK’s largest trade interiors event, at the National Exhibition Center.
In January 2009 we curated a space with the aim of providing an elegant and optimistic counterpoint to the panicky economic situation, a place within the show where designers and established manufacturers met, combining the classic with the extremely contemporary. The idea being that if people are going to buy things then it makes sense to spend money on furniture that’s always going to look great, that has a narrative and is enhanced by daily use and the passing of time.
To this end we combined Ercol’s Originals range of furniture with textiles from the newly formed Puff & Flock collective and Asma Hussain. Scp’s refined timber furniture designed by Russell Pinch and Kay & Stemmer with Caroline Saul’s baroque vessels fashioned from discarded plastic containers. We also presented UK based Norwegian designer Alex Hellum’s ‘Peg’ collection, manufactured by Ercol for Heals.
Visitors enjoyed seeing Ercol’s classics in a different context and the reaction from youngsters new to Ercol was particularly pleasing in that designs knocking on 40 years old were seen as being more modern than much contemporary furniture.
We also produced our first publication together with United Business Media and long term Designersblock collaborator Associate. The Companion was a magazine designed for the occasion of Interiors Birmingham to inform, entertain and articulate ‘ideas and thoughts from companies and individuals who are inspirational, prescient and well prepared for the future’.
To set the scene for 2010. Here at Designersblock there’s always a place at the table for a little serendipity and one such happy accident occurred last year when Edward Tadros CEO of Ercol suggested that we include a Napoli sofa designed by Sean Dare, together with the Ercol Originals.
After some ‘how are we going to make this fit?’ style head scratching, we had an idea based on the collaborative theme of January’s show and wondered if we could put something together especially for the occasion.
Timorous Beasties from Glasgow have done many shows with us over the years and their wallpapers were an intrinsic part of our Birmingham interiors plans, they make the best back drops to life and their wallpapers are so thick and of such quality that you can peel them off a wall after a show and re-paste them somewhere else. They also design, produce and print fabrics and textiles.
Time was tight and the viability of the project relied upon unconditional enthusiasm and both parties being able to combine their respective capabilities quickly and relatively easily.
We made some introductions and sure enough we had the happy thumbs from both resulting in an Ercol, Timorous ‘mash up’ if you like, resulting in a magnificent and very bespoke version of the Napoli Sofa resplendent in Timorous Beasties fabric. The project played to the strengths, facilities and expertise of both companies meeting to deliver a remarkable piece of furniture.
The project was so successful that we are going to continue and develop it for Interiors Birmingham in January 2010.
You will be able to come and see the Ercol & Timorous Beasties sofa at Designersblock London 2009 which takes place over 5000 Square meters of space alongside 100% Design in Earls Court One during The London Design Festival.
Interiors Birmingham takes place at the NEC January 24 – 27 2010.
