Imogen Luddy at Designersblock London 2010

August 19, 2010

Imogen’s textile practice spans wallpapers, fabrics, surfaces and desirable products for interior environments. Working across a widerange of media, including laser-cutting, embroidery, crochet and ceramics, she seeks to find new and innovative ways of exploring traditional crafts. Using antique lace, doilies and embroidered samplers as a starting point, her work aims to subvert these traditional practices by ‘digitising’ their structures and reproducing them in unexpected materials.

Cross Stitch Table
Using 16th century Italian lace as a starting point, this laser cut stainless steel Cross Stitch Table subverts the notion of a traditional table covering. In this piece, the role of the stitch is reversed; where its usual function is to build up the surface, here the absent marks of the ‘cross stitch’ replicate the pattern. The material too is transformed from a conventional delicate fabric to a hard and masculine metal surface.
