The little fellow pictured above is @Sponsbot by Matthew Plummer Fernandez. @Sponsbot was a twitter bot that retweeted any tweets from the ‘massive sports event’* official sponsors and replaced any words from the banned list with provocative replacements..
*Offending word has been replaced by a safe and innofensive alternative phrase.
@Sponsbot lasted nearly a whole day before Twitter suspended him. Sadly he is pixelated here because this is the only picture we have of him during his short but sweet life.
@Sponsbot is one of a series of Bots created by Plummer Fernandez as part of his Botology project.
If he had had time to put it out, the press release about the project might have included the following.
‘@sponsbot is a new twitter bot of mine who is very excited about the olympics happening here in the UK. It follows and retweets what all the sponsrs are tweeting, but sadly has to replace some banned words that are now exclusive to the sponsors. Useful words like ‘summer’. To be lawfully correct it modifies the tweets with replacements such as ‘shambles’ and ‘corporate takeover’. So if you would like to follow a lawfully modified version of corporate branding babble, follow @sponsbot. A project by Plummer-Fernandez, year uhm…1984′
