During this years London Design Festival, London-based designer Sam Weller will be bring to us ‘Holdfast’. The shelving system design began with the exploration of clamps and their infinite possibilities as both a tool as well as joining device.
The clamp elements that hold this range of furniture together are very simple in form and were based on the holdfast clamping system typically used for holding material to the surface of a workbench. The components are manufactured using a computer controlled wire bending device and then powder coated to finish. The components are then inserted into the veneered shelving and wedged under this supporting material, creating tension in the vertical leg and in turn making a strong stiff supporting structure for shelves as well as side tables, stools and other home furnishings.
The initial Holdfast furniture collection has been described as ʻsubverting familiar form with a new functional beautyʼ. The project has so far received critical acclaim.
“Sam Weller does interesting things with old craft technologies creating design solutions that use the simplicity of their forms and functions with new contexts and a new aesthetic appreciation.”
