With circa 50,000 design students graduating annually from UK universities a good understanding of career options is of ever more vital relevance.
Are Universities doing enough to support their graduates? How do private organisations like Designersblock , Artsthread and onedotzero help? Drawing on their 40 years experience of supporting early years graduates, this seminar offers practical insights and advice on those first steps into the 'real' world. The seminar will provide views from high profile recent graduates Camilla Barnard, Marco Monterzino and Patrick Stevenson-Keating.
Design and Entrepreneurship
Date and Time: 19th September – 17.00-19.00 Sunley Room
Creative industries contribute between 6% and 8% to the UK economy, growing at twice the rate of other sectors – much of this is driven by 'design entrepreneurs'. Who are they, where are the opportunities, why is this important and what issues do they commonly have to confront?
With opinions from Michael-George Hemus (Plumen/Hulger), Paul Bishop (The New English) and Russell Pinch (Pinch)this seminar promises a wealth of insight relevant to design entrepreneurs and others seeking an understanding of the opportunities the sector offers. Digital design agency Poke will introduce 4 digital entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in the sector. The seminar will introduce Riskkit – a service that helps parties collaborate in the development of innovative new products and services.
Design and Science
Date and Time: 20th September – 12.30-14.30 Sunley Room
Designers have always been interested in science and scientists are increasingly interested in how designers translate science into communicable concepts, products and services.
Referencing Designersblock's 'The Fifth Element' showcase, designers will provide illuminating examples of their explorations in this territory. Neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott will be in conversation with UK Beat-box champion Reeps One to explain what she learnt from looking inside his brain. Reeps One discusses his interest in the visualisation of sound as will be showcased at the Designersblock 16 launch at Southbank Centre.
Design and Society
Date and Time: 20th September – 17.00-19.00 Sunley Room
Design should be for everyone. Out of the Dark will explain their work with young people developing skills in furniture restoration, adding purpose and value to sometimes troubled lives. Designersblock explore how designers utilise underused buildings to encourage the creative regeneration/revitalisation of cities.
