Johanna Samuelsson is a textile designer based in Sweden where she is studying for a masters of fine art in textile design with a specialization in weaving.
By working with the technique woven shibori and foil print, the interaction between patterned surfaces and light is explored in a textile decoration. The work is a meeting between construction of textiles and treatment of surface, between industrial computerized jacquard weaving and printing by hand, between shibori and modern technology.
Additional pattern threads that are woven with shrink yarn create the patterned structures. When the fabric is exposed to heat, the fabric molds itself. This forms a resist that is printed with foil.
The textiles are inspired by the sun, how the intense light dance, reflect and glitter over a surface.
